Termination for Medical Reasons (TFMR)
Compassionate TFMR Therapy With Katherine Hyde-Hensley for Folks Carrying the Grief of Ending a Wanted Pregnancy.
You Made an Impossible Decision Out of Love. That Deserves to Be Held.
WHAT IS TFMR THERAPY?
TFMR therapy is a specialized space to process the grief, trauma, guilt, and loss that can follow a termination for medical reasons. This is one of the most misunderstood and isolating forms of pregnancy loss, in part because the word “termination” obscures what actually happened: you received devastating news about a baby you wanted, and you made an impossible decision, often with very little time and very little support.
Your grief is real. Your baby was real. And TFMR therapy is a space where both of those things are treated as true.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED TFMR THERAPY?
When the Grief Has Nowhere to Go
Guilt that won't let you rest
Even when you know your decision came from love, the guilt can be relentless. You may replay the diagnosis, second-guess every moment, or hold yourself to an impossible standard of certainty. TFMR therapy gives guilt somewhere to be examined, without judgment, so it begins to loosen its hold.
Feeling like your loss doesn't count
TFMR sits in a painful in-between: not always recognized as baby loss by the world around you, and not fitting neatly into conversations about abortion either. The isolation of feeling like your grief doesn’t have a category, or isn’t allowed to exist, is its own kind of wound.
Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories
Replaying the diagnosis appointment. Reliving the procedure. Being ambushed by grief in ordinary moments. These are signs that your nervous system experienced something traumatic, and that it needs more than time to process what happened.
Shame and silence keeping you stuck
Many people who have experienced TFMR feel unable to talk about it, with family, with friends, sometimes even with their partner. Therapy is a place where the full truth of your experience is welcome, without any of that noise.
The Love That Led You Here Deserves to Be Honored.
HOW WILL TFMR THERAPY HELP ME?
TFMR therapy is not about moving on or making peace with something that will never feel okay. It is about being genuinely accompanied through a grief that most people around you do not fully understand, so you can slowly find your footing again, and carry your baby’s memory without being crushed by it.
Having your loss fully named and witnessed
One of the most painful parts of TFMR is how rarely it is acknowledged as the profound loss it is. Therapy begins with someone sitting with you in the full reality of what you lost: your baby, your pregnancy, the future you had begun to imagine, without minimizing any of it or rushing you toward resolution.
Untangling grief, guilt, and trauma
TFMR grief is rarely simple. It often arrives layered with guilt about the decision, and trauma from the diagnosis and procedure. Therapy helps you gently separate these threads so each one can be held and processed on its own terms.
Finding a way to honor your baby and move forward
Many parents who have experienced TFMR carry a deep need to acknowledge their baby’s existence, but don’t know how, or feel they don’t have permission to. Therapy creates space to explore what honoring your baby looks like for you, and to begin building a future that holds both your loss and your life.
