Birth Trauma Processing

Gentle Birth Trauma Therapy with Katherine Hyde-Hensley for Folks Who Are Still Carrying What Happened in That Room.

What Happened to You Deserves to Be Witnessed.

WHAT IS BIRTH TRAUMA THERAPY?

Birth trauma therapy is a specialized space to process a childbirth experience that felt frightening, out of control, violating, or deeply wrong. Not every difficult birth looks dramatic from the outside, and that is part of what makes birth trauma so hard to name. You may have been told that you should feel grateful because everyone is healthy. You may have been dismissed, unheard, or left to make sense of something alone that no one should have to carry alone.

Birth trauma therapy says: what happened to you mattered. And you deserve real support in processing it.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED BIRTH TRAUMA THERAPY?

When the Birth Story Stays With You in Ways You Didn’t Expect

Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories

You may find the birth replaying without warning, while you’re feeding your baby, driving, or trying to sleep. These intrusive memories are a common sign that your nervous system is still trying to process something it experienced as a threat.

Avoiding anything that reminds you of the birth

Avoiding conversations about it, dreading medical appointments, or feeling unable to watch birth scenes on television. Avoidance is the mind’s way of protecting you from something it hasn’t yet had the chance to process safely.

Feeling angry, cheated, or robbed of the birth you deserved

You may feel rage toward your care team, grief for the birth you planned, or guilt for feeling anything other than grateful. These feelings are valid, and birth trauma therapy is a space where all of them are welcome.

Difficulty bonding or feeling present with your baby

Birth trauma can make it hard to be fully present in the early weeks and months of parenthood. If you find yourself going through the motions, feeling detached, or struggling to connect, this is not a reflection of your love, it is a sign that something needs tending.

HOW WILL BIRTH TRAUMA THERAPY HELP ME?

Birth trauma therapy is not about forgetting what happened or being talked out of how you feel. It is about processing the experience at a pace that feels safe, so it gradually loses its grip on your body, your relationships, and your daily life.

Having your experience fully believed and witnessed

One of the most painful parts of birth trauma is how often it is minimized, by care providers, by family, sometimes by yourself. Birth trauma therapy begins with someone sitting with you in the full weight of what you went through, without rushing you toward silver linings. Being truly heard is often where healing begins.

Helping your nervous system find safety again

Birth trauma lives in the body as much as the mind. You may notice you feel on edge, easily startled, or unable to fully relax, even when there is no immediate threat. Therapy works gently with your nervous system to help it understand that the danger has passed, and that you are safe now.

Learning to hold grief without being consumed by it

Healing does not mean forgetting, moving on, or loving your baby any less. Together, we gently work toward making space for both grief and life at the same time—so the pain feels less overwhelming and more possible to carry.

Reclaiming your story, and your future

Birth trauma can cast a long shadow over decisions about future pregnancies, medical care, and your sense of yourself as a parent. Therapy helps you move from a place where the birth is something that happened to you, toward one where you have processed it enough to choose what comes next from a place of steadiness rather than fear.
